Bennett Fifth Graders Bring a Musical Message of Staying Forever Free of Drugs and Alcohol blog entry by Samantha Langley, Chatham Central Junior

I recently had a chance to see the fifth graders of Bennett Elementary School put on a musical performance of “Forever Free.” A musical that brings us the message of why we should all say no to alcohol and drugs. The whole thing was amazing. The vocals were excellent, and the dance moves were original and fun. All the songs were new, edgy, and exciting.

The production consisted of nine songs that all went through different messages of why we should say no to drugs. For example in “They’re Not Real Friends” it explained how real friends would never make someone chose between them and alcohol. We should all chose our friends wisely, and ones that won’t pressure you into bad habits. “Talk it Out” was a song dedicated to how that students should talk out their problems with their friends, parents, teachers, or other trusted adults. While this may be difficult because our problems can seem overwhelming, it is the best solution. The use of cell phones in this song was especially original. In “Danger! Caution! Warning!” it tells the different dangers of alcohol and drug abuse - how that unless we stay away from these substances, we can never achieve the success that we can achieve without them.

The program was also very educational about the reasons why students get involved with alcohol, and the devastating effects of it. For example did you know that most students receive their first alcohol or drugs from family or friends? Also mood swings can also be a result of alcohol or drug addiction. Many students turn to drugs and alcohol because they feel alone and stress. While these problems may feel overwhelming, drugs and alcohol are not the answer. We should all help each other out and be friends to one another. Teachers, parents, and preachers are also a good source to help us.

The play also suggested things that we can do to keep ourselves away from drugs such as playing sports, learning a musical instrument, hanging with positive friends, or even reading a book. So as they said, “With so much to do, who has time for drugs?” This is especially important for students today because so many students are turning to these substances; it is all the more important for kids to realize that there are other options.

So as you can see these fifth graders did a magnificent job of bringing an educational message of staying ‘forever free’ in a fun and entertaining way. The performance was amazing, and the message inspiring. I think we should all join in their pledge to stay forever free of drugs and alcohol.

If you or anyone you know showing signs of substance abuse reach out. Parents, teachers, counselors, and other adults are there to help. Remember no one has to go through it alone.
