First Day of Governor's School East - Chelsea Gardner, rising senior, Northwood High School

Hello!

Today was the first day of Governor's School East! The moment I had been counting down for has finally arrived. And it has proven itself to be everything I expected- nothing short of  an interesting, academically rigorous, fun and busy day! It marked the beginning of "one of the best" summer's I willl ever have. Although, I have yet to fully experience it- my first impression is very bright! I hope at the end of the program I will be able to say great things about my experience. I am really looking forward to meeting more people and having new experiences. The TACS (teacher assistants/counselors) keep encouraging us to be open-minded and try new things. Later on this week, they have an acapella group and a newspaper club that I might join. They are also holding a songwriters workshop. I feel like this is my opportunity to take advantage of things that are not necessarily offered in our community. I think two sayings I will remember most about today is that "every once in a while we need to just take our cool off and embrace the inner nerd that's inside of us." I really liked that one and I also liked "this 6 weeks is a chance for you to be anybody in the world you want to be. Realize how people perceive you and think about if that's really how you want to be portrayed."

My roommate, Neha Garg, is really nice. We get a long really well and it helped that we already knew each other through facebook. Her Area I is French. She said that the most intimidating thing was that she realized that there were people here who were far more advanced than her. I even realize that I may come across people like that in my Area I. But that is just something you have to realize and move on from it. Everyone here is seeking more knowledge to better themselves. We're all here to learn.

There are 52 people enrolled in English Area 1. Our administrator, he is very funny, thinks it would be best to split us into three groups. One of the groups being Graphic Novels/Storytelling, Narrative writing, and Poetry. My first choice is Narrative writing and my second poetry. Either way, I will be content! Tomorrow is when we have our first class so I should have more to share! Our lights out is coming up soon...so I should probably wrap it up!

Until then,
Chelsea Gardner

P.S.
The only negative is that I won't be able to sleep in as late as I want too! But I'm sure the overall experience will make up for that :)
