Fourth Blog from Governor's School East - Chelsea Gardner, rising senior, Northwood High School

June 19, 2010

Greetings!

I think last night confirmed how great GSE is! Those that wanted to gathered in the Quad last night to watch a movie under the stars. The movie was entitled "Fantastic Mr. Fox" and it showcased great actors like George Clooney and Meryl Streep. I had never even heard of this movie but I'm so glad that did not stop me from seeing it. It was full of animation and comedy. The outcome of the night was that I ended up sharing a blanket with tons of other people outside on the grass until curfew. We engaged in laughter and before the film we all tried to sing (all 300 of us) Glee's rendition of "Don't Stop Believing." That didn't work out so well but it was still tons of fun!
I was granted the special benefit of sleeping in this morning- thanks to the English Department. Saturdays we (English students) do not start class until 9 a.m...which is great news! Following that I spent some valuable time with my friends on the quad. I went around and interviewed people for the coming issue of Eastern Star (GSE newspaper). I am getting people's feedback on their favorite electives offered here. There are rumors going around that we might have more electives like Bollywood, Ballroom, Modern Contemporary Dance, Lady Gaga and some others after mid-session break. Later, I met up with my Area II class to watch a film called "Run Lola Run!" This film was very interesting...nothing like I've ever see before. First of all, we had to read subtitles because it was in German. Second of all, the entire film pertained to the String Theory. Granted I am not knowledgeable on the String Theory subject, but I believe it deals with seeing reality in different dimensions and perspectives (11 to be exact). Apparently it's all about time and other philosophical interests.
Later tonight at convocation, we are supposed to hear a speaker on the String Theory. I'm excited to learn about this new phenomenon and discover how it pertains to our life, our world. I also ventured off campus today (for the first time). It was incredibly hot, but I was more nervous about following the directions and procedure. Most people get study hall for not following the "off-campus" procedure.  My friends and I ended up going to the store then the nail salon to get our eyebrows waxed.
After convocation, we're having a dance party! I can't wait...curfew is extended by thirty minutes over the weekend so we're all going to be taking full advantage of the extra time. We don't have classes on Sunday so I'm making arrangements to clean-up around the dorm and get my laundry done! In the afternoon, I plan on going on to Crabtree Mall. Shopping's always fun especially when it's a big group of friends involved! I know tomorrow is Father's Day so I probably will not make an entry.  Just wanted to say, Happy Father's Day to all the dads- especially mine :) We, children, really appreciate all of your hard work and efforts in raising us to be the best people we can be!

Until then,

Chelsea Gardner
