Sixth Blog from Governor's School East - Chelsea Gardner, rising senior, Northwood High School

Greetings!

I am so happy to be able to say that I actively participated in the poetry slam on Tuesday. It was my first poetry reading ever and I am so glad that I was brave enough to do it. I read my autobiographical poem and everyone enjoyed it.  I would like to share an excerpt from my poem:

"I am leading a poetic life.

It's one of those relentlessly beautiful lives,

with all the imaginings of a concrete rose.

My life is poetic like an endless sky filled with peach and baby blue undertones;

with a slight glimpse of lavender heaven.

It seems as if it will last forever- interminable.

The world goes by me like still images,

each one a photograph imprinted in my brain.

A safeguard of still life.

I had an innocent childhood

as so many other children do.

Monsters were not real,

and all evil and wrong

would always be defeated by good.

Everyday was a blessing,

filled with sugar-coated happiness

and sticky fingers discovering new life."

I really enjoyed writing the autobiographical poem. Chuck gave us a template and then allowed us to expand on it- with our own creativity. The part I shared with you was some of the introduction. Right now I'm working on how to incorporate appropriate metaphors into my poems.

I saw Toy Story 3 yesterday and started tearing up. It just reminded me of how close I am to graduating. We took three charter buses to Crossroads 20 and about 231 students bought tickets. GSE students have a habit of clapping during convocation and just other random moments- whether appropriate or not. I had no idea that people would actually start clapping during the movie and then when it was over- we all stood up and clapped. I'm sure the people sitting in the movie who weren't with us were pleasantly surprised by our behavior. I also decided to write an article for the newspaper instead of interviewing for quotes. I thought it was about time that I step up to a higher staff position. I am becoming more familiar with the paper and Colleen, our adviser, is great. I have to write a top-story on the GSE Best Dance Crew performance tonight. I am really looking forward to showcasing my talent.
